The Choices we make

The Choices we make

Author’s note: This is a response essay to a quote made from the book “Crossed”, by Ally Condie. This quote was said by Cassia in the book when she was telling the reader about a gift she received from her mother.

“In the end you can’t always choose what to keep. You can only choose how you let it go.” Have you ever had something you really loved but you couldn’t keep it? Some people have things they feel like they need to keep. Well in this story Cassia has something that was given to her from her mother. Where Cassia lives she can’t keep anything and everything that Cassia has gets taken from her unless she hides it.

First, Cassia is a quite person she likes to keep to herself. Also Cassia is missing her best friend; this is a reason why she keeps to herself. She is also a very curious person. Cassia is very curious about the mountains and lakes, anytime she hears an official talking about either one she listens very closely and tries to get as much information as possible. What does this quote mean to you? I think this quote is telling the reader that life isn’t fair; you can’t choose what you can or cannot keep in life all you can do is choose how you will let it go.

Secondly, a reason Cassia said this is because she was planning to run away but she could only take very little things with her. She wanted to take a gift her mother gave to her when she was younger but that meant she wouldn’t have enough room to bring water and food to last her. Cassie also had to bring along a map and compass. She had to pack light because if she took a lot of things with her she would never get away.

In conclusion, people have to make choices they don’t want to make. Sometimes people have to get rid of things they love and cherish to survive. For example Cassia received a gift from her mother but she couldn’t keep it in order to survive.
