Symbolism
Authors note: I am writing a short response of symbolism on the story
"The Lottery", by Shirley Jackson.
Symbolism is a way to represent
something. In this case symbolism is representing something in the story
"The Lottery". In this short story there is a lot of signs of
symbolism. Some signs that I found are rocks, the black box, the paper/ticket,
big rock, lottery, and the black dot. Symbolism is also a way to help a person
understand a story better.
The big rock shows a symbolism
of friendship. This shows friendship because in this story the lady was being
stoned. Her best friend grabbed the biggest rock she saw to through at her.
Yes, that may sound like she isn't a very good friend right. Why do you think
she grabbed the biggest rock? Well a reason she grabbed the biggest one is
because she didn’t want her best friend to go through a long and hurting death.
She wanted to save her friend the suffering of standing there getting hit by
lots of rocks. So she threw the biggest one to kill her faster.
In conclusion, this story
shows very good symbolism. Also the symbolism in this story can help you
understand the story more.
It's very good writing, just try to work on your conclusions!
